dragonfly

hi guys,

here`s a new image, rendered with cycles (1000 samples).

the aim was to create a photorealistic macro image of a dragonfly.

This looks really good!
The modelling and materials are just perfect. I’ve tried to make one of these too some time ago but the project failed at the very beginning so I know how hard it is. This looks very convincing and most people would probably think it’s real.

May we take a look at some wireframes?

Without any doubt I would say: You definitely reached the goal you were aiming for! Perfect realism.

Very well done! I agree that you have achieved what you set out to do.

Mission accomplished, I would say. Very well done!! My only crit would be the texture on the eyes. The pattern of the cells looks too straight and should be rounded more I think. But that’s a small detail and I’m not even sure if my idea is correct. I Googled “insect eyes” and to me they look more radially dispersed. But I love this image and think it’s fantastic!!

Wonderful work. In a photo gallery nobody would even think this is CG. Awesome realism and great attention to details!

thank you for all the great comments! maybe i’ll post some other renders in the next days (clay or wireframe)…

Nothing to complain about. This is excellent

excellent! just confused comparing this and a real dragonfly, keep up the good job!

That’s fantastic! I love how the water drops magnify the leaf texture through them… would love to know what settings you used for the drops! (If you have time to share, of course)

Also, what card did you use for rendering and how long did it take? Thanks

Very nice, the water droplets and hair look really good…

Wow, gorgeous texturing and modeling. Only thing I see that looks a bit off is the lift geometry on the wings. Usually there is a small differing height on the second and third leading vein for aerodynamic lift. You can check out some reference images here:

These are object files and take a minute or so to load, but you can rotate them and view from different angles.

Fantastic work though! Wish I had that kind of talent in modeling and texturing

Wow…stunning! You just nailed those waterdrops as well as everything else. I hope people will take the time to look at the high rez view and hit that zoom button, because it just gets better.

Glad this hit the top row, brilliant work! Congrats!

@copperplate: i think the way he did the water drops is he used the glass BSDF material in cycles
amazing render!!!

I think this is a great render, although I think a nice vignette or framing would bring the focus in better to the dragonfly and really bring it all together. Other than that the overall render looks to be very real and the water-drops are perfect. Great job!

great modeling and rendering, and beautiful image …!

Amazing render. (I faved yesterday in deviantart without knowing it was made with Blender)

beautiful! this is so inspiring naturalistic, that i want try one too
