For this project, I wanted to create a wintry scene with a frozen lake. It doesn’t fully feel like winter yet where I am but it’s definitely getting there soon.
Initially, I planned to focus on the ice being cracked and broken into pieces, but this turned out to be a bit too heavy for my computer. Instead, I used this as an opportunity to explore snow and ice materials. The ground and frozen lake are procedurally textured with noise and voronoi textures, with a bit of ambient occlusion to help. In particular for the ground, I used a noise texture to mix a muddy texture with a snow texture. For the frozen lake, I used voronoi textures to “draw” the cracks on the ice surface. The trees and grass are from Botaniq or GScatter - I mixed in the snow texture to the grass myself to make it look frosted.
The snowman is textured with the same snow texture I used for the ground (with a little bit of variation). The scarf was made by applying a curve modifier to a rectangular-ish mesh. I used Lightroom and the iPhone photos app to edit the colours.
Hope you enjoy!
