Dyntopo in Blender sculpting needs MAJOR revamp, the speed compared to Nomad Sculpt on iPad is not even in the same dimension!!!
On Nomad sculpt, I can still sculpt in real time with dyntopo with zero lag even when the poly count has way exceeded a million while generating thousands of polys with each stroke, their is literally zero reason not to use it at all time on Nomad sculpt, but in blender, because dyntopo perform so catastrophically poorly, I have to constantly disable it just to be able to sculpt normally when I reach the late stage of the sculpting process, and enable it temporarily and set the strength of my brush to 0 to add geometry; it’s so frustrating coming from Nomad on an iPad, especially when my PC is so much more powerful than an iPad with quadruple the memory yet get bottlenecked to oblivion by Blender’s piss poor dyntopo performance while Nomad Sculpt on a fanless iPad is tornadoing around Blender in sculpting. I don’t know why blender is so far behind in terms of dyntopo performance or just sculpting performance in general, but Jesus Christ someone please revamp sculpting performance in blender because the improvement in 4.3 is no where near enough, dyntopo performance is what they need to focus on, not normal sculpting performance, and I’m surprised that basically no one is mentioning this problem.
And no, do not tell me to use voxel remeshing, there is no way every time I need slightly more geometry in one part I have to wait a couple of seconds to remesh the entire multi million polygon mesh; the only reason to use it is to combine multiple meshes into one in the initial blockout, that’s it, even with the current dyntopo performance it is still infinitely better to use a 0 strength brush to add geometry with dyntopo on one small part of the mesh than to remesh the entire mesh to the same level of detail every time I need more geometry just to do the same thing.
If anyone know the specific technical limitation on desktop or due the nature of blender being also a modeling software that make Blender dyntopo perform so slowly please let me know, but I personally can’t think of any technically limitation on desktop that can make blender sculpting perform so poorly.
Dyntopo refactoring is on the todo list for the sculpt team, but the list is long, and while a lot of usability and performance issues have already been tackled (to the point where a full sculpt in Blender is very doable now), it will still be a while before the rest is really brought up to speed.
Keep in mind that what the team started with in general was a hot mess compared to established sculpting solutions like ZBrush, so there has been a lot of refactoring and rewriting that has been required.
I think there should be an option to vote with donations what feature needs to be focused on, because so far I don’t think there is an easy way to inform the devs directly what feature each donors wants to improve upon next.
how much are you willing to donate?
This discussion comes up frequently and it always seems to me that users want every possible feature improved. Like, each user works with Blender so differently that everyone has a different answer to this question. I have never seen a clear agreement.
That’s just inviting a very unhealthy power dynamic similar to shareholders in a company by giving the most wealthy donors the most say over the development of Blender.
This won’t be an actual vote, it’s just a way to inform the devs what most people want the most.
I’ve already donated 25$, I would have donated more if I know this issue is being addressed.
On a long enough timeline, it will indeed be addressed.
if you want those features right now, your best bet would be use your ipad.
if you want those featured in blender right now, take that $25, multiply it by approx. 1000, and hire a developer. But, keep in mind, that probably still won’t be enough.
But good news, patience is free. so just wait and keep an eye on the development updates.
Maybe calm the rhetoric down a bit too, insulting the developers isn’t the best way to get them to prioritize your desires. And before you deny ever insulting the developers, calling someone’s work ‘hot garbage’ is pretty insulting, don’t you think? The developers that you want to do that work for you are the ones that made that hot garbage you are so intent on demeaning.
No one else that I know of even mentioned this specific issue, and this is not a niche feature that only a small percent of people can make used of, this is basic sculpting feature that should be improved upon and will massively speedup sculpting pre-retopology, I’ve yet to know anyone who doesn’t use the sculpting feature in blender, and Dyntopo is just infinitely better than remesh in terms of the freedom to add new geometry on the fly whenever wherever you want.
It is not just a matter of funding, you can pour out the funds, but it does not mean an increased availability of devs. for hire who would know this area of the code (which is actually a fairly advanced area so the BF can’t just get someone fresh out of college).
I’m not insulting the dev. A, I’m pointing out a fact, and the fact is blender dyntopo compared to Nomad is just objectively garbage, and if pointing out a fact is consider an insult, then maybe someone needs to stop being a snowflake, because in no where in my post did I directly insulted the devs and call them incompetent; B, I’m mad that basically no one is pointing this issue out, I don’t see any forum discussion mentioning that dyntopo needs major revamp, or how much it will improve the sculpting experience; C, I’m not going to pay a dev myself to add a feature that everyone else will benefit, everyone who would benefit should A, mention this issue, and B, donate collectively to bring about a solution, that’s the whole point of free and open source.
Best of luck in all your endeavours. I see a bright future ahead of you.
Your attempt at irony did not land, and I don’t think you’re aware of it.
Bless your heart.
Still didn’t land, try again.
Give it some time, you’ll figure it out eventually.
Don’t you mean “I’ll figure it out eventually”?
There was an official survey back in October where you could vote on what you wanted the devs to focus on. Shame you missed it.
Here’s how I voted:
Thanks for the tip, though I don’t understand why they only make the survey available during a specific time, not everyone can pay attention to this sorts of things, is there a newsletter that they email you?
