Edge Loop Not Continuous?

Hi All,

I am trying out the car modeling tutorial on CGCookie.

I am new to edge loop modeling and I am trying to maintain proper topology but I keep getting blocking edges in my work which interferes with my ability to select the edge loop.

What causes this and how do I fix it?

In my picture, you can see that the bottom edge loop of the fender wheel well is a valid edge loop. I extruded out to create new next level and started building from that. But somewhere along the line, that outer level became blocked by edges and now I can only ALT-R select a portion of it.

The tutorial does not cover this situation so I am asking here.

Thanks

if possible it would be easier to upload the file
so we can look at the mesh and see what’s wrong with it !

as soon as you get more then a certain number of edges on vertex it’s not part of a loop!

another trick here
mind you another way to make certain that i used ounce and a while is to begin with a nurb surface - that always have quad faces on it
so you shape it as you need then convert to mesh and voila it should work very well all the time

happy blendering

You need to research about poles. you have 2 5 poles there. (See attached)

If I get more time I will explain how to fix it. (at work right now)

kind of dense, but you get the idea…

@NOOBIE
shame, shame!

One way to fix it, not very elegant but it works. (See atached)

The problem with this fix that I see is that you are setting yourself up for more 5 poles to appear at the top corners of this example mesh.

Here is the file as it stands.

@spacetug: that is the tutorial I am following.

@noobie: the tutorial mentions nothing about poles. So how do I get rid of them? My topology appears to be made up of all quads.

After briefly watching the first part of the tutorial I didn’t see the selection of edge loops as a neccessity to making the model porshe.
How do you get rid of them - you think before you add geometry.

Cool car your’e making hope it works out ok
