Edit mode cursor in Blender 4.1 changed - how do I select multiple vertices?

I am following the Blender 4.0 tutorial.
In https://youtu.be/AqJx5TJyhes?t=156 Blenderguru is in edit mode with a “+” sign as a cursor and he selects a whole lot of vertices by drawing a rectange.

When I do the same in Blender 4.1 I get a hollow “+” and I cannot select as per the tutorial. Do I need to change something like a cursor-mode?

Also, I never get the dots at the vertex junctions. Do I do something wrong or is that Blender 4.1 behavior?

To see vertices dots, you have to be in Vertex Select mode.
The iccon button next to mode in Header of 3D View.
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/modeling/meshes/selecting/introduction.html#selection-modes

It looks like you are in Edge or Face Select mode.

To be able to select by drawing a rectangle, Active tool in toolbar has to be Select Box tool.
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/interface/selecting.html#select-box

In Tool Settings Bar, there are icon buttons defining selection modes ( Set a New selection, Extend, Substract, Invert, Intersect ).
If you have changed the default, that is Set a New Selection to Substract, Invert or Intersect ; that could explain why you don’t select anyything.

Thanks! That helped a lot. I can now continue the tutorial.
For some reason I still don’t see any dots where the vertices join, but I can highlight the junctions and move them around:

So, maybe that is how Blender 4.1 displays it now?
Also, I have not changed any defaults – everything still is as it was supplied with the Linux snap.

In any case – thanks again!

Wasn’t there a setting to set the size for the vertices somewhere?
It’s been a while since a changed any settings in the prefs so YMMV…
