I just thought that I would try to model Eddie Van Halen’s Guitar (Frankenstrat) and I don’t know how I should make the parts I circled on the picture. The way that I went about making it is that I loaded a picture of the guitar in the background and extrude a square a bunch of times and move vertices to the outline, and I don’t know what to do when moving vertices to the circled parts Any help here would be fantastically excellent. Oh yeah and to color it, will I have to uv map? The only problem that I have with uv mapping is that I never really understood how I would tell where to mark seems. Please help me. Thanks.
I would start with a cube at the neck pick up position, then extrude it both directions to span the bodyand then rotate the faces on the right out ward to begin forming the horns.
Real trendy . . .

I’m not so sure I know what you mean…actually, I am quite positive that I DON’T know what you mean.
Jealousy is a bad thing… btw, do you have on eof these since they’ve been making them with Charvel again? Pretty nifty if you have the penny
Pffft. I wish I had one of these. But the replicas cost…lets just say I would be better off buying a house with that kind of money.
Ok, so I figured out a way to model the “horns” or what ever you want to call them. Then I subsurf it and it looks like picture 1 then I increase the levels and there are just weird lines on it(Picture 2)Next Post). What can I do about this?
Select all of your vertices in edit mode and recalculate normals outside with ctrl+N. If you still see artifacts, try adding an edge split modifier.
Yeah, I already tried to recalculate the normals, but I didn’t try the edge split modifier. I will give it a try.
Looks like you have triangles spread across the body - if so, you’ll need to try getting rid of them. Also, maybe you need to select the vertices on the top faces and go to side view and scale all to 0 to flatten the selection.
Ok, I seem to have everything going alright there is just another thing that I don’t know how to make. On this guitar, where the pickups are the wood goes in like Eddie had to cut in the would around where the pickups go (but didn’t do a professional job) and I don’t know how to make it like that. Any help is great.
All I can say is cut some loops across both ways, move the verts around to get the general shape, extrude (but don’t move yet) the faces, then push them inward. You might need an extra loop cut inside the extrusion wall to get it crisp, depending on you subsurf level.
Ok, I guess I will give that a try.
