Existing diffuse map to normal map

(A diffuse map that is baked onto an unwrapped atlas/island setup.)

How do I go about properly turning an existing diffuse map into normal?

Using Gimp I use the quick normal map maker on that but the edge/seam lines of each island pop out when applied on the model.I even tried inverting the y axis but still get that issue. Is it just impossible?

Try Materialize. It’s free.

You can also try Shader Map 4, it’s free and offers more settings than Materializer.

An old copy of X-Normal ( no longer being developed ) is even better for building Normals or other maps from the Base Meshes.

This one also has some good references…

Using the color map but with non-color and a Brighness/Contrast node with contrast for example 10 and then using this as input for a Bump node already makes simple nice fake normal or better bump map to bring out “the details” a bit more.

Here showing only difusse and only bump… :

Of course:
To make an even better normal map a “real” normal map backed from geometrical detail would be best.
