F/A 22 Raptor

I’ve seen a few of these, but this is mine…

Still deciding what renderer to use. At the moment I’m only considering Biased renderers as Indigo and Luxrender take too long. C&C Appreciated.

pretty sick start

What style are you going for? I like the almost cartoon style in the last one.

Yea I am not a fan of the last image. Looks the the Ray traced reflections didn’t come through with Yafray, I would stick to BI or maybe Luxrender or Indigo. You have to specifically do things to get Yafray looking better but it has some good results. Looks like your modeling is spot on so far! Can’t wait to see more!

The style I’m aiming for is realism… The only renderers I’ve used in serious projects are Blender and Indigo, so I was doing a few experiments. BI and Yafray returned nice results, but I didn’t understand the glass material setting in Yaf(a)ray so I set it as opaque. I did a quick Indigo test but it wasn’t very good because I set the gain on the glass too low (I only just figured that out after a day and a half). The result is below.

I started this project ages ago - it was my first attempt at a plane, before my (so far) successful X-02 WIP. At that time I was useless at making smooth meshes that subsurf liked, and the result looked crap. The points on the cockpit were also proving annoying so I gave up.

Recently I was bored so I opened up this project, and used the delete edge loop tool I only just found out about to clean up the mesh. A few renders later…

Anyway, I’ve been playing round to get a decent clay render and this is my result.

Inspired by the other guy attempting an F-22 at the moment (whose name I can’t remember, but thanks anyway) to reboot this… although for every one minute of modelling I do, I spend ten minutes redoing the topology to make it look right. I must be out of practice.

I know it looks out of proportion, but I assure you, its on track.

looks great! doesnt seem outta proporsion to me, keep up the good work!

well good to know i can “inspire” people. Gonna follow your F22

i have looooooottss to learn from your f22 it seems… clay render, nice shiny reflections… good lighting… … :spin:

Yeah, I was looking at your thread and thought “I’ve got nothing to do, I’m on holiday, my other project is rendering and will be for another hour so why not work on the raptor?”. So thanks for that.

BTW, if you want, you were asking about wireframes in your thread, there’s an awesome tut on the BlenderNewbies site for doing them, where a wireframe is overlaid on a clay render for a really clear effect.

On the subject of my F-22, I’ve got the underside near the intakes… pretty much done. Maybe a little more tweaking. Here’s a render.

thanks a lot . i am going to watch and try that tut when i get home.

If you want to wait, Indigo is well worth it.
Keep up the good modeling.

I’ll eventually render it in either Indigo or Internal. I’m getting used to both.

Working on some vents this morning. Had to use quite a few triangles which initially cause some subsurf problems but i think I’ve resolved those.

Glad to see this thread is still alive and kicking! Great modeling work, can’t wait to see this puppy finished!

Yeah, I haven’t been doing much in Blender over the past year or so. But I did some more work on the F-22 today.

I’m currently trying to work out the bugs in the topology on the topside before heading underneath. One thing I’m confused about is the undersides of the wings. If you find a photo, you’ll notice large bumps connecting the ailerons to the wings. Can anyone tell me how the ailerons are attached? All the photos seem so suggest they’re fixed in place, except they’re not.

Working on the tail.

and wire…

Did the engine exhausts. I didn’t want to do any non-fuselage parts until the fuselage was complete, but the engines give me an indication of how to model the back.

Heading underneath now. Comments Appreciated.

Best resource I’m ever going to get for the underside…

That last render is absolutely amazing! It doesn’t look like a bad texture at all… Great work!
