F4F Wildcat (Update Texture Dec.17)

I’ve been working on this some for the past few days. Its and F4F Wildcat fighter (used as a carrier plane during WWII). I’ve been having some trouble modeling the plates on the sides of the fuselage. I found a way that works, but I haven’t done them yet so its kinda plain right now. Anyway, here’s what I got.

Yeah, I know. When I was trying to figure out the fuselage plate thing, I hack off the rest of the tail for some reason. I’ll probably fix all that today.

Looking good. No crits from me, As for the panels, there was a tut in blender general about space ship hull panels, though the same methods could be applied to planes.

The only minor thing i can find is, that the front edge of the wings is not straight… very twisted…

How do you get the sharp edges at the places with the rudders?

Thank for the replies :slight_smile: I think I’m not gonna model the panels. To much trouble to go through. I looked at a close up pic of the real thing and they are so small anyway, so I think I’ll just paint them on with the rest of the texture later on. I got the cockpit coming pretty good. I also put some basic color on the plane, as well as a temporary back ground.

hey, I need pointers on how to make the tail and the wings. Are they just subsurfed planes ? I’m trying to design a plane but some reason I’m stuck on the tail and the cockpit.

Also you might wanna cut some holes for where the rudder connects to the plane. They are quite visible on the shots I’m seen at airliners.net .

Well, I used subsurfed circles for everything you see on the plane. But planes would probably work fine for the wings and stuff… Give that a try.

The fact that plane and plane are spelled the same is making that discussion confusing. :-?

lol, oops. First “plane” is for the airplane. 2nd “plane” is for the object. As in mesh.

nice work on the model. i have a friend whos big on ww2, so this is kind of up my ally. the model itself seems very sound, it looks like the biggest challenge from here is going to be texturing work. i don’t know how detailed you’re planning to go with this, but i think it would be sweet with cool camo textures/battle damage, etc. overall very nicely done.

Haven’t had time to work on this much lately :frowning: What I have done is to totally rework the cockpit (it was really crappy before, i just made what came into my mind instead of looking at reference pics), start on the engine/prop bit, and put a background in. Still got a lot left to do though…

Start working on bumpmaps decals etc. Might want to add a few instruments popping out of the fuselage for this and that. and make a good metal material and dont forget about some reflections on it

Hmm… well I’d say it needs some more work. It would help to see the rest of the plane for a sense of context. The main issue I’d have with it right now is the lettering doesn’t look right to me. But seeing the whole plane in the shot might help.
