Female Torso Retopology - Help Needed!

First post! Hello Blenderartists community. I started my first real intermediate retopology project, and I ran into a wall.

Somehow I ended up with a big ol’ hole in the butt that I can’t figure out how to fill neatly. I’ve gone back and forth between three different versions trying to solve this on my own, and I feel the hours wasting away as I keep pushing vertices around without solving the core problem. So here’s the most easily salvageable one (I think?)

Planning to use the character for animation. Feel free to redline my screenshots! And thank you so much for any advice or suggestions!!

Welcome :tada:

You might try something like this (use the slider) :

GridAndHipA
GridAndHipB

This will also smooth out the topology.

I can’t see the bottom image

@cymorg I think it depends on the situation.
I think it can be solved simply or the edges can be organized overall.

Thank you guys!! Your suggestions helped a lot. Here’s the new butt, looks way better and the hole is filled!

But there was a second problem I forgot to mention. I somehow ended up with a spiral that created an ngon on the inner thigh. I’m not sure how to fix it, every time I try I end up extending it.

You could probably end this spiral by changing the direction of the edge loop at its end.

end

I have shown it on the end of the spiral as it is right now, but you could put this pattern earlier on the spiral to end it where you want if there is a better spot to do so.

By the way, I see a triangle. This is probably why you have an Ngon, a single triangle somewhere on a fully quad mesh tends to be paired with a 5-sided face somewhere else. It would probably be possible to do the edge flow in such a way the 2 problems meet each other and turn into quads.

triangle

Sometimes a triangle in an area which are of less interest is not that bad. And sometimes you even get some more “detail” (topologywise) even if you do not need this like maube so:

Of course this all depends on your usecase.

Thank you guys so much for all the help and advice! Here’s where I landed tonight.

The spiral is gone, I don’t know if this was the neatest solution. I also got rid of the triangle on the thigh that was causing some issues! Let me know if you guys can think of any improvements to edge flow.

Next, I have to start focusing on the hands…

I think the edge flow is good enough. I might slide things around a little to make face size more consistent and square, but that’s about it.

Also, be sure to check the central edge that goes along the spine. I see some 5-sided faces and some vertices that aren’t merged in the middle. Those should be easy fixes though.

spine

If you have two 5-sided faces touching each other, you can fix them by connecting their opposite corners through their shared edge, this will turn them into 2 quads each.
