First Face: An Old Man

Hey guys!
I have paused my Smaug project and made this. It’s my fist face (thanks to TorQ’s amazing tutorial  ) so don’t be harsh!

I was actually making the robot from I, Robot, but things got a little outta hand, you know, playing around with edgeloops and stuff. And now it’s an old man. C&C greatly appreciated (I keep saying that over and over again  )

Hi 4Daniel, for your first (fist?) face great job… I’ll give you crits, but don’t worry about it too much; you’re doing great, practice will get you there.
proportions-wise, not terrible, the mouth is too wide, the eyes are too small and too far apart. shape is a bit off. try to have more “structure” around the eyes instead of having them poke through the skin like that. He also lacks eyelids.
he doesn’t seem to have cheekbones either.
some strange creasing coming out from the eyes into the middle
strange creases on the top edge of the nostril.
the "smile line crease is to high and out and too sharp, unless he’s smiling.
but its a good start overall.

You can easily see a crease line where it was apparently mirrored in the middle, you might want to fix that.

AAAARRGGGGHHH!!! If I hear one more “crease” line in the middle complaint In the wip forum I’m gonna flip!! He’s mirror modelling!
Repeat after me: When a thing is WIP, as in Work In Progress, as in Not Done Yet, posted in the WIP forum, one does NOT stop the mirror modelling. You do that when the modelling is finished. For instance, when You’ve modelled the forehead, the back of the head, ears, neck, sometimes the rest of the body. Please don’t post for the sake of posting.

:stuck_out_tongue: Cool down, slikdigit, I bet you’ll read about this over and over so please don’t flip

BTW: I can’t see the pictures with the crazy seams… For me, all I currently get is red crosses in white boxes. I suppose the bandwidth of your website is exceeded at the moment, Daniel!

Thanks for the tips slikdigit! I’ll be right on it. And thanks for the replies! :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s a few updates:

That’s the problem, it’s obvious he’s mirror modeling, I don’t mind if it’s there in the WIP forum but hopefully he’ll smooth it out when he’s done.

Well, DUH! %|

On the model, it is very well done indeed. slikdigit covered the bases in his crit, so I have nothing else to add.

BgDM

hhhmmm i think i can see a crease hahaha joking dude, i love tis and its ur firts wow, my first was a cube

Thanks Grim, BgDm and Kansas_15 and others for the nice replies, and hey, I have a reply of BgDm! Now I feel proud LOL.
An update coming soon. Maybe uvmapping if noone has crits on the modelling still…

It’s up to you; I suspect you are still in the learning phase, and improving UVmapping will never happen if you never stop modelling. However, I think you could still push this a little bit further.
You’ve still got funky creases on the inner eye.
The eye distance looks better, but remember, the eyes are one eyewidth apart roughly (never as far as you have them) The eye shape is wrong, they look too ‘flat’ and too sqaure. they should more be an oval with edges from the intersection of the two semicircles created by the eyelids. Currently, I don’t see real eyelids. The tear duct shouldn’t be high up in the eye, more towards the middle/bottom.
nose bridge needs some definition, consider adding an edgeloop vertically if you don’t have enough points.
See how the lips are coming out to a point at the edges? they should still have thickness, facing to the middle an in. Think of the lips as being based on a twisted ribbon- it doesn’t come to a point anywhere
the distance between the nose and the top lip is at least twice as long as it should be.
Keep on going! there’s a lot to learn from both simple and complex models.
