Hi guys, I’ve used Blender on and off over the past year or two, but now I want to get better at it (it’s the only CG software I’m familiar with).
This scene is the most serious, and largest project I’ve done.
There are some more improvements that it could use, but I just plain am so tired of it and want to start something new… know what I mean?
Therefore, I want criticism and advice for the future, but I probably won’t bother making any more adjustments to this image.
Oh yeah, and if you can think of a good title for it, let me hear it. Some of my ideas were Midnight Raid, Tentacle Trouble, and some other stupid ones like that. lol
Theres a lot of detail in that picture, you have to look at it for a while to understand whats going on. So thats good, because youve managed to capture the viewers attention for quite a long time. Plus you get the feeling theres a bit of a story behind it.
I really like the texture and modeling of both the octopus, the material especially is very nice.
Wow — creative — I love it. I like the fish in the cage, and the skeletons. Made me chuckle. The coins scattered amidst the pebbles are nice too.
If I may, can I offer one critique? When I first looked at it, I thought the tank’s lid was part of the shadow. Is there any way you could separate those forms? Lid color, perhaps?
By the way, materials are all procedural - still need to learn UV mapping and stuff.
As for the tank looking dark, I agree. To me it’s clear to imagine the details in the darkness because I built it - but for someone coming in, it could be confusing.
So, I made some little renders. Which is the best one?:
I’m leaving this reply from my laptop, usually I’m on my desktop. And, looking at it on this screen is VERY different. The colors are much less saturated obviously, but to my surprise the details in the dark areas of the image are easy to see as opposed to running together. That makes me feel like I should take the dive and buy an LCD calibrater, even though good ones seem pretty expensive.
Considering that none of this is UV mapped and all procedural textures, this is amazing stuff. Some of the textures look a bit out of place though, most noticably the fish skelleton texture.
Wow! It’s rare to find a decent 3d image with an intriging storyline to boot!
The whole premise of coming home to find my tiny octopuses fishing for their own food is great. The fact that they have obviously failed to the point of missing their target and grabbing a key by accident adds to the hilarity.
My only critiques are that at first it appears as though they are trying to get the keys off the wall. The key floating on the water was the first thing my eye was drawn to, and second was the key holder on the wall. I’m also a bit confused as to why they are both fishing. Are they competing against each other for fish? Perhaps it would be better to have one of them holding the pole and the other pulling the line. It’s twice as funny when two characters are working together to achieve something ridicously abserd.
I know it’s already been addressed, but I feel as though the lighting lacks contrast. There aren’t any brightly lit arrears to the picture that jump out at you. So everything appears to blend together, making the viewers eyes dart around the scene grasping to find the key character. Most fish tanks come with a flourescent light over the top. So you could perhaps draw the viewers eye to the smaller fish bowl by situating a glowing light over it. You might need to change it from a spherical bowl to a rectangular one for this to work, but I think it would be worth it in the long run.
But regardless of whether you make any revisions to this picture, you still have a killer image that will sit very nicely in your portfolio. You have a lot of potential as a 3d artist as you seem to understand that above all the technical aspects, it’s the story and characters that deliver the payload. Bravo!
I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.
