Well, as I mentioned before, I have a Radeon 7500, and have the latest drivers installed in XP, and in Linux am using xfree86 4.3, and DRI.
I get the following errors:
In Windows XP:
AppName: blender.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.13.10.3036 Offset: 001baa8e
I thought I could fix the problem by removing .B.blend as described here: http://www.vrotvrot.com/support/showitem.php?faq_id=1354
But apparantly the file doesn’t exist in Windows XP…
So… what I did was renamed atioglxx.dll in /windows/system32 to atioglxx.cop as described here:
http://www.google.ca/search?q=cache:S4nsbqyQDp8J:pub19.ezboard.com/ftreditingzonefrm2.showMessage%3FtopicID%3D776.topic+atioglxx.dll&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
And now everything works again!!!

it does exist.
Did you do a manual search around just browsing random folders, or did you use the file search engine?
Blender creates that file when starting up, so if you can’t find it, either it was never created (meaning you never runned Blender on this machine), or it was deleted/renamed.

i did a manual search, as well as a complete file search…
the file does exist in win98, but not in XP, I can guarantee it’s not there…
It only appears if you change the default settings. That is, hit Ctrl + u, and then it will write it…
Otherwise, no. I can’t find where I read that, but it is referenced on the net

A guy wrote it in this forum in response to my original question here:
https://blenderartists.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14974
but since, i couldn’t even get blender started, i couldn’t hit ctrl + u to write that file, that’s why it didn’t exist…
