Fixing the roundcube - anyone have an explaination?

Ian Mcglasham’s Tutorial demonstrated that the default roundcube in the extra shapes extension doesn’t quite shade right. the 3 spoked poles and neighbours need to be moved to get a smoother sphere.

i was wondering if anyone had an explaination for this. my guess is that the shade smooth algorithm is linear and doesn’t accurately predict a sphere but again that’s a guess.

Why haven’t these ‘corrections’ been done to the default sphere? or is the sphere mathemetically correct and this isnt considered a ‘problem’.

i don’t mean to have a go at anyone - I am genuinely curious. i get 3pole bumps a lot and maybe there is a systematic issue that can be addressed?

Many thanks.

The round cube isn’t the default sphere, it’s an extra mesh from an add-on.

Yeah- don’t use 3 poles

What do you mean by “linear”? The shade smooth algorithm is the same it is in every other 3D software, the technique dates back to the 80s and you can easily find papers describing how it works
