Flexform Filicudi Ottoman

Oh ****! That’s a tough one

Made me swear out loud. I wonder how I am going to make it.

Manufacturer provides a somewhat useless model:

Well, at least the dimensions of the legs are there so no need to guess that, but the material… I need the material  Can’t wait to see how I’m going to solve this one. I could just flatten the mesh to an unwrapped UV map, model the woven straps, attach them to the flat version with some deform modifier and transform it to the original form, but the seams… Those are going to be fun:

It doesn’t seem symmetrical either… Not sure I really like this one…

I guess the woven strips could look something like this.

Geometry amount is going to be a problem, I guess. Let’s see how it goes.

First attempt reveals issues. Well of course it does.

The real one seems to be asymmetrical, some rows are higher:

OK. OK… Does this matter?.. What am I doing with my life?.. OK, let’s try again.

That’s satisfying:

It’s not as bad as it seemed. The structure is quite easy. I just need to connect some strips manually. It’s like 128 manual connections. Not too bad. And apparently it’s not a tangled mess I expected.

4 corners like that and that’s it. Cool.

It’s not perfect, but I think it’s fine. There is probably some variation I’ll need to add, because the straps are too tidy now and if I work on the material it’s going to be fine:

Close enough. I see stuff that could be improved by redoing it a couple more times though. Could be better… I did not bother with variation too much… It’s fine…
