Freelance Concept Designer for Animated Film

About the Project

We’re venturing into an unknown dimension— and we need a mind as strange as the universe itself.

This is an animated film project that fuses cosmic horror with slapstick, an oddball sci-fi epic that’s as existential as it is absurd. Imagine crashing 2001: A Space Odyssey into Monsters Inc. - or THX 1138, with a dash of Tron and a heavy pour of Looney Tunes. (It’s kind of a cosmic gumbo…)

We’re in early development and are seeking a Freelance Concept Designer to help build the very fabric of our universe— from bizarre tech to minimalist interior design, haunting voids, crudely built structures, and surreal cosmic engines.

You’ll help shape the visual identity of the film’s sets and props- playing a key role in building out the world’s environments and physical details, with a focus on tone, composition, and style.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate directly with the director/writer to design sets and props that feel visually distinct, darkly humorous, and thematically cohesive.
  • Create concept sketches, visual explorations, and moodboards to guide the look and feel of each scene.
  • Block out environments in Blender to assist with layout, camera planning, and storyboarding.
  • Build final 3D versions of sets and props in Blender, optimized for use in animatics and production.

Requirements

  • Strong concept art portfolio with a focus on environments and prop design.
  • Proficiency in Blender, and a solid grasp of visual storytelling through environment.
  • Ability to take abstract or offbeat ideas and turn them into bold, memorable designs.
  • Comfortable working remotely and iterating based on creative feedback.
