soady,
I love your work. I have been following you for a while. You’re inspiring me to put more of my work online, and I just did that moments ago. I found you on ArtStation, and am glad to find you on this site as well.
I like the image. Frostbite… it’s something I’ve never experienced myself, but came close to it several times. I feel the missing element here is snow… It’s all ice, but I think if you could add in some snow somewhere, it’ll be a much better image! Try to play with translucency of the ice material… It is tricky, but once you get it, it works wonders! Otherwise, great work!
Thank you, Abalaich! Yes, you should definitely present your work as much as possible, that way you can get quality critics that will help you evolve. Just like I got a great critic from you now.
My idea was to make ice blocks that have snow on top of them that is completely frozen, almost like ice. I avoided the soft new snow. I did use translucency and subsurface scattering, it would look very different if I didn’t. I have a different way of making ice but here I tried a different approach. It definitely needs more work but this was a test to make something really quick, it took around 2 hours.
I plan to make January 2016 my Daily/Weekly/Monthly artwork challenge. That means that I will be posting an image daily, at the end of every week and at the end of the month. Still speculating if I will have time to follow it through but I would really like to try it.
I like this! Nice job on it!
Ah I see… Now I understand the direction you’re going in now. Yes, I’m starting to use the social network, forums, and etc to present my 3D work. I’ve been involved in the past 5-6 years, but never bothered to get into it. Once I switched to Blender from Houdini/Maya, it was eye opening how supportive the online community is. So, it’s great!
Alright, I like the image now. I think what you could do is vary the color a bit in the frozen snow/ice? Perhaps it’s a specularity issue you could look into. For me, it doesn’t quite look like it right now. Here’s an image that could help for reference if that’s what you’re targeting for.
I know it’s not high-res, but I took it off from google images by typing in “glacier ice with snow”
Looking forward to seeing what you end up with!
I was going for something like that, yes, but I wanted it to feel even colder. I didn’t use any reference, tried to make it as quickly as possible. Some color variation sounds great, thanks!
