Frozen Land

Hi guys!
Finally finished, I’m very happy with the result!
The entire project was made in Blender and textures in Substance Painter. For color management, I chose the ACES workflow for better colors and contrasts. The composition was also made in Blender compositor. I used Zbrush to add some details to the montains and the ship.
I tried to push Blender to the limit, using VDBs, motion blur, a lot of scattering and SSS. I was very impressed with the power of Blender to handle this huge scene.
Thanks to my friends, my boyfriend and to a lot of artist who helped me achieve this result.

It looks great, saved it to my drive since it’s really well done.

I have a question about the ACES workflow tough, I believe filmic looks a bit washed out for renders and ACES looks much better!
I’m not an expert just based on comparison I’m saying this.
But ACES for blender seems a bit too complicated since we have color and non-color for filmic but there’s tons of choices for ACES. my question is based on your experience is ACES workflow something that could be easily replaced with current one?

I’m currently trying to get into ACES and have edited my config.ocio for Blender. You don’t need most of the stuff from the list. Just edit the config.ocio file and remove anything you don’t need, such as all the camera stuff. There are roles and alias’, which are “copies”. For example, Matte_Paint is exactly the same as Utility - sRGB - Texture. You can see it in the config.ocio file.

I copied the ACES folder to Blender instead of using Environment parameter. That way, I can have a unique config.ocio just for Blender whereas in Nuke, I use a different config.ocio with all camera colorspaces, because I need them there.

The most common colorspaces for Blender are:

Utility - sRGB - Texture: replaces earlier sRGB. Use it for color maps

Utility - RAW: replaces earlier non-data. Use it for those special maps for reflection, displacement etc.

Utility - Linear - sRGB: use this for HDRI (some prefer Utility - RAW becaue it has less saturation)

EXR files are saved with ACEScg
