''Gaps'' & ''cuttings'' when using the modifier Subdivision surface

Hello Blender folks,

I am relatively new to Blender and haven’t found any solution for my issue yet. This issue has been an obstacle for a lot of my projects so far, was frustratingly looking for any help in the internet. I was nearly thinking about completely giving all up, until I found this forum. Hopefully, anyone will come up a solution :slight_smile:

My issue:
When I add the modifier ‘‘Subdivision surface’’ on any model, there are always some ‘‘gaps’’ although there aren’t any gaps in the original model. Furthermore, the model itself is getting a new shape, it has little cuttings (Don’t know to describe it exactly, I recommend to take a look in the images below)

Here is the model before adding the modifier:

After adding the modifier,

The attachments are ‘invalid’. Please try uploading them again.

Probably you have duplicated vertices on your models, depending on your workflow
Try and select all in edit mode and ‘Remove Doubles’ from the mesh tools in the Tool Shelf.

------ Pls notice this:
When I was trying to edit the first, original post, the post disappeared/deleted. I don’t know why.
However, this here is the first post with the correct inserted images as demanded
If anyone has an idea why the post was deleted when I was trying to edit it, please tell it me

Probably uploading the file would be more helpful than just screenshots.
At some point you have split those edges either with an applied modifier, or by your modeling method.
In edit mode you could select all vertices and do a remove doubles operation. Depending on how you got here you might need to increase the margin in the operator panel or F6 dialog to see any benefit.

Spaxxel,
I wonder why to spend time answering your questions if you don’t even read them.

@Paolo,
I read your advice and tried it out. The thing is that I have trouble with this forum… When I post or edit something, I can’t see it in the next minutes/hours. It’s really weird. I am regulary visiting & posting on other forums so I am not used to this strange behaviour. :confused:

I’ve tested it out. Removed all double vertices. Blender said that it removed 11 vertices. However, the issue is still there and it fixed nothing.

@DruBan,

Here is the link of my model. Hopefully you or anyone else can help because I can’t continue working in Blender right now.

You have geometry inside your mesh.

You have troubles with the forum because you have less than 10 posts, and as a new member your messages need to be moderated, but it is only temporary.
As for my reply, it was because I saw a post from you (disappeared now, maybe a duplicate) asking the same question, with no mention to the fact that you tried to follow suggestions or not, sorry.

As for your issues with the mesh, I think that riveter’s reply is the right answer, and removing internal faces together with removing doubles should resolve.

There are interior faces, edge that connects two surfaces and unconnected/overlapping geometry. Faces/edge to remove marked as red (bottom viewport).

Mesh elements has to connect to each other, or the whole mesh part they’re connected to has to be separate. There’s no middle ground where just some mesh elements are connected and some are on top of each other. Add cuts so that you can merge vertices or have a clear separation between mesh parts.

Result when these errors are removed:

Thanks for all your helpful replies, I really appreciate it!
However, the problem is not entirely fixed - although I considered the advice of deleting all interior faces/edges + spending hours (no joke) of comparing the correct model of Ja12 and mine if there is anything that I forgot.

Everything is fixed except the front and the back. There are still ‘‘gaps’’ which are not filled.

Here is the result so far:
