Gecko

Final piece for ‘Weekly CG Challenge’ Nature Up Close topic.
This was always going to be a texturing and shading challenge for me - the actual gecko modelling took less than an hour.
I spend ages trying to work out the best way of doing the bumps (scales?) and realised that I didn’t really know much about the technicalities of bump maps, normal maps etc. or how to use Substance Painter properly.
I ended up drawing the spots, turning that into a bump map, using that as a displacement modifier then adding a normal map created from it on top. Really not sure if that is a good workflow - I have a tendency to overdo things at this stage in my learning - but it created an effect that I liked the look of.

Nice Gecko!

Great image! I love the work you put into the scales (there’s just so much detail) and the way it looks into the camera is just adorable.

Less than an hour, kill me.
To answer your question, no they’re not scales. And yes my nickname is wrong but there’s no name for those apart from skin and ChameleonSkin sounds weird to me. Maybe it’s just me though. Is it just me?
