General AI Discussion

Funnily enough I did ask gpt4 about it a few days ago and it did came to the same conclusion as potential negative outcome:

Humans will always produce art. We have always, and we will always do. I’m talking about the most visceral form of art, the one that we use to express ourselves, or as a form of self-contemplation. The form of art that pushes infants to scribble multicolored nonsense on a piece of paper, that pushed our ancestors to dip their hands in ash and paint the walls of ancient caves. Bestial, shamanic art. Art that doesn’t ask for context and doesn’t answer any question.

Producing art as a means to an end, though, is bound to disappear, sooner or later, wether we like it or not. We are currently witnessing the automation and fall of the trade of artist. We just rendered useless the many hours, sweat and tears of so many people working in this business it’s a bit dizzening to be honest. We also just opened a box which will bring the fulfillment of producing and the joy of playing with art to so many people, it’s dizzening too.

We are witnessing the coming of a new age of Humanity. Asimov described it perfectly with its Multivac computer 70 years ago. Maybe some day, all the combined knowledge and experiences of billions of billions of humans will be condensed into a single, all-knowing galaxy-sized giga computer ? Or maybe the last thing the last individuals of our species will do before going extinct is to dip their hands in ash and paint what they see outside of their cave, because they feel like it ?

Hey , I don’t follow a lot what is said here but you might find that interesting :

The inability to copyright AI art is not the victory many artist seem to think it is.

this is vestigial, 20th century thinking.

The competition from AI art is not dependent on having copyright protection.
Here in this short attention span world of instant gratification, the value of visual art will be reduced to how many clicks, views and impulse subscriptions it generates and what social/political narrative it successfully promotes.

It will be DISPOSABLE, thus making it even more cost effective for people to avoid hiring an artist and be bothered with negotiating usage rights etc.
the same will be true for AI generated music.

Well, no matter what AI is part of our life as artist now.

But say I’m Marvel and find a new character design using AI, now it’s a risky move because I might loose the rights over all this IP, since the original design made by the AI is public domain. It’s quite well put in the video.

For sure if I start to mix different parts of different generated character, and transform it enough then it’s not a AI generated image anymore but an original creation.

Just like if, as a designer create a robot character made of kitbash pieces I own the right of that character, not the kitbash provider.

You can’t generate clicks, views, or subscriptions if your video is removed from YouTube for copyright violations, though. So yeah, copyright matters quite a lot

Except one cannot commit “copyright violations” on youtube (or any platform) using AI generated content as such content cant have copyright protection in the first place.
This makes such content more attractive to people needing an endless supply of cheap disposable editorial artistic content with very little investment.

It is not a good idea to be dependent on big tech’s social media platforms in the first place, because for starters they have a reputation for making TOS changes that end up being retroactive (which means you can be banned for something you posted many years ago and the service just now has a problem with it, so good luck sorting through hundreds, if not thousands of videos to make them compliant). It also does not help that they tend to use sketchy moderator AI that cannot understand context and rewards flagging campaigns, and then you can’t reach a human for help unless you are a big revenue generator.

Based on browsing Youtube myself, I am not sure if the cheaply done AI art (which looks largely the same from video to video) is going to make getting clicks that much harder on a site which already rewards the use of clickbait thumbnails with hyperbolic and even outright false titles.

Agreed my point is that wether its click bait YT thumbnail art or blog post headers etc.
tradition artist ability to copyright their works
was based to a degree on scarcity that scarcity
is gone.

And anyone can use AI for any political narrative
without even having to find an artist who share their world view or give them “usage” rights

As soon as everyone’s feeds and searches become a never-ending firehose of AI content, they might throw their hands up and find out there’s an entire physical world they have been neglecting because they have been glued to their phones or PC’s (ie. breaking the spell of screen-induced zombie behavior). Many might even decide to try out a new and novel idea known as applying for a job.

This might ultimately be a good thing.

Aren’t you typing this post on a keyboard, connected to a computer, in front of a screen, inside?

Hugh, well spoken!

Because that’s what all the progress is for, right?

This is not a blanket ban on AI and it does not appear to cover the image and video generators, but it does mean those who already started to automate a bunch of things will have to go back to doing them by hand (and yes, it would probably include the new addon for Blender).

There was also another article calling for a complete halt in AI development for 6 months, indicating a possible war between the futurists and those who believe humans are not designed to witness such rapid technological change.

The key word is inside, and also not to the point where I am forgetting to perform basic functions of living such as having meals, going to the bathroom, or sleeping. There is actually such a thing as people who literally can’t put the phone down or choose not to consume content even when walking around the neighborhood on a sunny day, which I have seen myself.

Technology, at least at some point, has overall been a good thing, but we are getting to a point where some of it is proving to be more as an agent of corrosion for the body and mind than something that actually enriches it. There are some areas for instance like a school setting where the use of computing and smart technology should be kept at a minimum and other cases where they shouldn’t be used at all.

I would like you to consider the possibility of implementing an artificial intelligence that can be developed in order to provide a user interface to solve user tasks.

This “wish” seems to be something like a “do-it-so”-button… even the description what you expect it to do is very general if not to say unspecific… Even reading the RCS article…
What exactly does automatic mean ? This automating should “just do” everything what a user want ??

…to whom are you actaully talking ???

Disregarding the fact that there are already some threads about the usage of this technolgy here on BA… Someone already can use this new technolgy to generate addons and also there are some addons to use it already. Burden the blender developers with more work ??

I in general think nobody can make your life easier… except some experts in their profession… where are the experst in this technology ?? Do you trust a computed result more then the knowledge of real experts ? Maybe because it is data mined / stolen from the work of real masters.

Isn’t that the point of AI support? You want it to be rather general so that you can automate reather unspecific tasks.
Like “Select all vertices belonging to the characters left ear”. The AI would have figure out what a character is, which character is meant, what a left ear is and then decide which vertices belong to this part of the mesh.

This would obviously be tremendously useful but if it is feasible withing the next couple of years I have no idea.

Well… the artist exactly knows what parts belong to the left ear… and traditionlly in chiseling/ carving/ sculpting/ painting they have done a pretty good job over some thousend years now…

What i wonder is:
Why do we have to use a technology for this now… ??? … Why is this better ? ( easier… yes)
… I also hear/ read by far too much the word tedious in this context…

If everybody just can prompt something like:

>: Make me some super dooper model...

Then: for what purpose would you do it ?? To sell ? To be admired… because everone could do it by themself… for themself… so it would be purportless:person_shrugging:

(

really ? which – to tedious to even specify this ???
)

Well, if you do not want to automate tasks for faster results then you are obviously not the target audience for AI things.
Makes me wonder, though why you woukd use Blender at all because Blender automates tons of things without AI.

Well, yes. If something is as ubiquitous as, i don’t know, air, then nobody will pay you for it. You’ll have to find a different job. But that is rather meaningles. If 3D jobs become obsolete or not does not hinge on whether Blender integrates AI or not.

I don’t think I ever said anything about “tedious”.

Of course i also want my things done fast… but my questions is : why does only AI have the capability to do so ?? Sometimes i thing of it as snakeoil… good for solving anything… or must have ingrediant toll sell anything… ( we use AI to make the best detergent you could ever buy to make your laundry even more clean… :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: )

I only was wondering… and don’t want to argue about the good and bad of AI…

No you didn’t… i was a bit exaggerating
