Generate Data Layer- What does it actually do in Data Transfer

Hello everyone,
Do I have to push the “Generate Data Layers” button in order to make the Data Transfer Modifyer work properly?
In which case would I even use it?

This modifier was created before introduction of Geometry Nodes.
Its goal was to transfer Vertex Groups, UVs, Vertex Colors, Custom Normals, Crease/Bevel weights, Sharp/Seam edges, Freestyle marks, before creation of mesh attributes.

It can still allow you to do that, without creating a Geometry Node tree involving Capture Attribute nodes, Index nodes, Geometry Proximity nodes, Ray Cast nodes, Sample Nearest Surface nodes, etc…

The “Generate Data Layers” button creates Vertex Groups, Color Attributes, UV Maps, named according to the ones of Source Object, on Object modified by the modifier. Then, you can edit them and use another Mix mode than Replace mode.
