I recently finished this project. This piece is modeled after a rotary phone that was a staple in German households during the 80s (West, not East). I did all the modelling in texturing in Blender and some grading in Premiere. The images are in 4k, rendered with 2048 samples in Cycles. You can see more shots here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/142796063/A-Famous-Telephone
For the cable, I created a helix from a mesh circle with the screw modifier. It is explained here: https://www.versluis.com/2016/05/how-to-use-the-screw-modifier-in-blender/
The pivot point has to be set to the outside of the circle in order for it to work.
I could have just made the helix by creating a Torus Curve Spiral (from the extra-objects addon) and giving it a thickness, but the advantage of doing it with the screw modifier is that it’s non-destructive. By setting the instances, you can efficiently change the length of the helix at any time.
It would have been easier if Blender allowed us to change primitive parameters after we have created them and made another operation like 3ds Max for example.
Anyway, then all that was left was to create a curve (path or bezier) that goes roughly how the cable would flow. Then I added a “Curve” modifier to the helix and selected the new curve and the correct axis (usually Z). Once I was happy, I applied a visual transform and did the ends of the cable manually by extruding and adding a subd on top.
The images are 2160p though, not 4K.
The only real critique is that the repeated texture on the phone is noticeable. Other than that it’s photorealistic.
Thanks for the feedback!
You are right, sorry, I got it confused with UHD again.
Regarding the tiling, good that you pointed that out, I just noticed it because of that (assuming you’re speaking about the dust layer).
Good work, tho some extra fine details, signs of usage, could make it amazing.
Do you plan to rig and animate it? Or are you already selling/sharing this model somewhere? Would be great to play with it and a waste to just let it sit on a disk.
Thank you for the feedback! Good point. Now that you say it, I can clearly see the lack usage-details. Maybe bigger, more visible scratches and some chips in the plastic? Or what are you thinking of?
Yes, I plan on rigging it at some point (in a couple of months, very busy atm). Then I will also adjust the model to closely match the proportions of the original. If I am satisfied with the result, I might share it on Gumroad or 3dSky
