I created a screen I don’t want. I found the bit about moving the cursor between screens until you get the up/down arrow then right click for a menu to manipulate screens. The “join areas” option disappears for these last 2. What am I missing?

It’s because they are differently cut. The screen at the bottom has 2 divisions while the one at the top has only one window.
Divide de one at the top and put the separations of the windows at the same point. After doing that you will be able to join the windows.
