Gooch Shader in Cycles

Hello Blenderheads.

At the time of this writing Blender 2.68a is the latest release. Since the Toon BSDF was a new feature I started wondering if I could make the famous Gooch shader. It turned out to be harder than I expected because the Toon shader doesn’t have colored shadows. That is to say that if you shade a sphere with Toon, then the color you select will only apply to half of the sphere. Gooch’s shader is well known for having a neutral center and accentuating the sides that fall off to the left and right of a model with complimentary colors. This increases visibility and helps with depth perception on flat images. I liked the idea of making one in Cycles not even so much so I could use it in the traditional sense, but because I saw potential in what this technique could do for everyone who likes to do still renders.

A little bit of help came from the folks hanging out on Stack Exchange.

I like that a lot, thanks for sharing!
