Grass and Rock

Hey everyone,

I’m new to Blender and I’ve gone through a bunch of tutorials, so I decided to try making something on my own. It’s pretty simple, but I wanted to focus mainly on materials and lighting. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, especially the grass, but the rock still feels a bit fake to me… Anyway, critiques/advice welcome…

not a bad start - to balance it out composition-wise, you might want to consider putting a couple smaller rocks on the bottom left.

welcome to BA

That’s real cool. Are you going to post a *.blend for the hair ? A lot of members fall on this trap, and it may be help for future newbies to view something like this.

Thanks guys!

I thought maybe uv-mapping a grass texture to the grass, so you get some variations on the green color of the grass.

Which version of the particles are you using?

You know, I was messing around with a lot of textures on the grass and I had one for variation. At one point I deleted all of the textures and started over, though, so I must not have added it back in. Good idea, though, thanks!

And this was done in 2.45. I just DLed the test build of 2.46, though, so I’m pretty excited about cloth and hair!

Good work! The grass is very well made, I think the stone is a bit too smooth. You could add a fine bump map to it and increase its level.

That grass looks great! I can never figure out how to get static particles to look like grass.

You should use 2.46 RC and COMB the hair. though it stll ooks soo real!
