Grass in Cycles

this is almost my millionth try with grass in cycles, i was trying to get the best grass i could make and im satisfied with this and nothing more is coming to my mind so i thought ill post here, also i added the sword for fun, main concentration is the grass

Looking cool man!

I feel like i am seeing green underneath the grass… but in reality this would be dirt wouldnt it be? i feel like it needs to be a little bit more dense aswell and a bit more colour variation in the grass itself

thanks, i tried dark brown but it gave too much black in the picture, maybe ill try a dirt texture, also i am trying to find a way of creating the colour variation in cycles but it isnt that easy as it is in BI :frowning:

Is that particle fur, or objects? I didn’t think Cycles supported fur…Some randomized rotation might help touch up the scene.

there objects, i modelled them like tree, splitting two times as they go up, that creates the furry look, also thanks for the tip, i added random rotation but apparently not enough

Hello mtalhalodhi…

I think the grass is too thin. It’s looking a bit like fur.

You’re on the right path! Carry on!

Thanks, i fixed that, and i reduced the amount of flowers :), also heres an update

Hey, I like the grass. It’s not ultra realistic, but I feel like I’m looking at an oil painting when I look at it, which is really cool.

Hey, what style are you going for realistic or cartoony? I know grass is super hard, but keep at it! I suggest at leas 3 different particle systems based on around 5 grass blades mesh each. This not only helps randomness, it looks way better than one or 2 systems based on the same thing.

You’ll get there!

Jonathan L: or just use a group for the particles instead of a single mesh, you can set the system to pick a random object from the group for each particle. An easy way to adjust the frequency of which meshes it uses is to, include multiple copy’s of the more common elements so it samples them more.

i was actually going for realistic, but it looked so fairy tail cartoonish that i decided to add a sword :p, i am using 2 particle systems, 1 for grass, with 2 different mesh objects, and one for the flowers, im going to add a new one with a little darker grass now that creates some patches all around, and some sunburned yellow grass too, thanks for the tips

I disagree with the thickness. I think most people usually make it too thick. These people are usually city folk :). In the northern grasslands of North America, grass is real whispy. So I agree on your choice of it being thin. Not all gras is just saud or kentucky blue grass (most popular grass used in yards).

I think what makes it out of place are no shadows on the rock from the grass itself and the rock itself really has no shadows. Which way is the sun coming from? It looks like its coming from every direction right now. Otherwise it has a nice cartoony look.

Consider grass though. We only know it as green but out in the country there are other types of grass mixed it. You would also expect to find a few weeds if it wasn’t cartoony. Take a look at this.

See how there are so many different colors being mixed it? Blue green, bright green, kermit green, yellow, yellow green, brown.

actually, instead of making multiple copies, you can set the ratio of the number of particles using the “use count” check box in particle render tab

wow, thats pretty cool, i dont see much grass here because im living in almost a desert style area, but the picture you sent was really good, thanks

thanks for the help guys, heres a check list i created, also its 6:30 am here and ive been awake since 3, so i think ill take a nap now, will start working on it in day time

update, added another layer of grass and fixed up the sword a little bit

Hey man, not bad! I like the grass! I think the yellow on the sword is making it look cartoony now because everything looks more real and the swords hilt? has bright yellow on it. I’d probably stick with black maybe.

I think you boulders are a bit overboard and not quite the right color. The sculpting of them is too much. Maybe some rocks have that much recess to them but most generally they are smooth, but with sharp angles to define their overall shape but the texture of them is mostly smooth. They remind me of these walnuts rather than boulders

I always look to references:

The grass looks really great though and I like the rocks have quite a bit more shadow on them. Great job so far!

thanks, the yellow was looking a bit odd, as for the boulder, i think this should do?

Update 4:

Looks cool, I would blur that glare a bit though, it’s a little too strong, and I would add a lot of scratch texturing to the blade, since, after all, it’s stuck into a rock.
