Grease Pencil which layer is in front?

I have been following this tutorial video while examining envelop modifier with grease pencil,

and when it gets to the part of duplicating layers and drawing bushes and roses at :

I just cannot get the order of display bushes and roses, which one is behind and which one is in front, right, using Blender 3.5. This is what I got on my screen, the roses are behind the bushes, not in front:

I don’t know which order for displaying the software decided. This is the file I am using:

20230107_learning_grease_pencil_envelope_modifier_order_problem_0001.blend (1.4 MB)

Can you tell me how to define surely the order which one is displayed in front, and which one is behind?

The layers and materials are separate.

Select the layer and then select the material you want to paint with, you can freely switch between materials and they will all be on the same layer.

So in this case you have two layers called lines and fills.

Since fills is at the bottom in your file, you would select fills and then paint the bush with any combination of materials.

Once you are done you can select lines (since it is your top layer) and paint the roses with any combination of materials.

You can freely move the layers up and down.

In a sense, it works that same as drawing programs.

I am confused by the order of things and I suddenly realised that it was me who was confused. In 3D space, you work out the order of visibility based on the distance to the camera. Here I have two grease pencil objects which resides at the same location to the camera, and that’s where the confusion came from. I just need to move the object roses to the front (relatives to the active camera) and I will have it displayed in the front. The layer system and (front/back) arrangements are only useful in the drawing objects, that is within one grease pencil object. Outside of it, at the 3D space (Outliner), you will have to realise the distance to the camera decides which is at the front, and which is at the back. I moved roses grease pencil object to front and I have what I wanted.

Thank you for replying anyway!
