Great White Sharks, in my opinion, are the most amazing creatures, apart from humans, on the planet. Well, not the most amazing, but you get the idea. I’ve been wanting to model one for quite some time now. I just started. This is what I have after about 15 minutes:
It needs work from the top. I mean, when you look at it from the top view, it looks awkward. I can’t find a reference image of the top view of a Great White either. If anyone has one or knows where to find one, please let me know. I’m going to do some research on shark behavior and mannerisms in order to get a true-to-life feel to the animation that I’ll be doing. Any crits and comments on what I have so far would be greatly appreciated.
Here’s a second render with eyes and gills. One of the problems was that the sharks midsection was too skinny. I fattened it up a little bit, maybe not enough. I still need to fix the area around the gils, and it looks like the body and tail are two seperate meshes(they aren’t).
Please help get this shark looking right. And I’m going to need some advice on how to make the textures. I’ve heard that you can cut your hand on shark skin if you rub it a certain way. So critiques and comments are encouraged. Thanks.
Looks pretty cool already! Yes, you are right about the skin, when you rub it in the direction from tale to head it feels a bit like sandpaper, you could get hurt by that alright… but you can barerly see that structure on the skin unless you take a real close look… The model you made so for simulars more a tigershark than a white shark I think… There’s a lot of information on the white shark (and others) on the internet, do some searching on google and lots pops up I promise you! Though I’ll give you a link which contains quite some pictures of the white shark, many photo’s use kinda the same angle, but it has 5 pages of images or so. When you’ve watched them all I think you’ve got enough angles to get a good reference… specially when you combine it with a google search you’ll be fine… http://www.oceanlight.com/lightbox.php?pg=1&sp=Carcharodon_carcharias
Thanks tumtidum and deadman. I fixed the gils a little bit in this render, but you can’t really tell at this angle. So this render the shark somehow ended up with an overbite, and he has no nostrils. I’m gonna call it quits for tonight. I’m going to try to get it to a point to where I can begin texturing. I’ll do that tomorrow after school.
Yes, very cool so far.
And yes, they feel like sandpaper when you rub them from back to front. I think that this is one cause of injury when people are “bumped” by sharks. You can see in the pictures at tumtidum’s link that the “tail” fin is not longer on top like a tiger shark’s… it’s symetrical… same size on top and bottom. One of the things, I think, that makes them believe that the Great White is such an old species.
Very nice so far. Am looking forward to seeing this guy finished!
It’s been a while since I’ve worked on this. I got sidetracked and started working on a game. But now I’m back on track after watching Finding Nemo for the first time. I adjusted a few thing with the mesh: I made the nose pointer, the upper jaw was brought back a little, and I adjusted his tail fin. I started texturing him as well. After several trial and error texturings, I found one that I like. It’s not perfect, it’s not finished, but it’ll do for now. I’m starting to work on the environment. This will be tough to animate. Does anyone know of a free animated caustics generator? I’ll put some coral in the scene and some other sea life. My vision is to have him swim through the Great Barrier Reef. So I’ll need some help…lots of help. If anyone has any suggestions, please, by all means, suggest. Here’s the new render :
No AO this time. I just wanted to do a quick render.
Render with a single caustic image. Increased the lighting a little. I think it will be a lot brighter and happier. I’m not going to make the shark eat anything. I want to give people a different view on sharks. Great Whites aren’t maneaters. Most of the attacks come out of curiousity. They bite just to see what you are, then realize that the you aren’t one of it’s usual prey, so they let go and swim off. So I’ll probably try to light this like they did in Finding Nemo.
it looks amazing, my one crit is that the rays of light on the sand(i guess caused by caustic, i don’t quite understand the whole thing) for a pattern that is too ‘regular’, ie. they almost all form petagons
it looks neat, but I think you should try the ramp shaders for the sharks body. And the lighting idea is brilliant, but the effect isnt coming out great, I suppose you could tweak that a little.
I finally created an animated caustic to project on the sea floor. I began animating. I added an anemone that I made sway, with two clown fish swimming amongst it. You’ll probably only notice them in the very first second of the animation. I’ll be changing that. Here’s a list of a few of the things that will be changed :
-Sharks movement will be more fluid-like, slower
-1 Clown fish will go in front of anemone
-An octopus will be modeled and animated
-More coral/sealife will be added
-Rock structures will be more broad
If you have any suggestions concerning the shark’s movement, or anything, please post your comments. Thank you. Here’s a low quality version of the render(faster upload time) :
I just added blur because it was underwater and I figured it would be blurry, but it’s not going to be used as the final, unless someone tells me otherwise. Comments and crits appreciated.
