It’s been a while since I posted, with work getting a bit busier. For this project, I wanted to come up with a procedural way to generate trees that would still give me some artistic control over what it looked like. I used Blender’s built in add-ons to generate the brick walls and used Booleans to carve out gothic arches. Besides this, much of the trees are from Botaniq.
Behind the final artwork
Not so long ago, when I was still getting into Blender, I wanted to make a geometry nodes-based tree. It was a really confusing and frustrating experience, but the final piece looked like this:
I’ve always wanted to revisit this piece since, with the different techniques I’ve learnt, and thus this artwork was born.
The above image demonstrates roughly how I made the tree - with a geometry nodes set-up allowing me to draw curves and instancing several smaller curves on the existing ones. I was able to control the girth and rotation of each curve. I have linked several videos below that I watched to help me develop this set-up. For the branches, I mostly followed CGMatter’s video on L-systems.
Finally, I edited the artwork in Lightroom.
