Hair curves: "Curl hair curves" modifier always goes crazy on this mesh

I checked this multiple times: I’ve downloaded some Blender example files for the hair curve system and another head mesh for a tutorial: when I add hairs and the “Curl hair curves” the hair looks just curly. When I use the exact same settings within my own file you see what the hair looks like after adding the curl modifier. It’s not just for this model - if I add a sphere and add hair to it the result looks the same.

There must be some hidden setting (I hope) bc I’m quite sure that it’s not related to the following:

  • all transforms are applies
  • the parent mesh for the hair system has a not overlapping UV map
  • the hair has enough vertices (or points or whatever itÄs called for curves)

What I’ve done:

  • Add empty hair curve to mesh
  • added some hairs in sculpt mode
  • added the curl modifier → it looks like this

What I’ve found out now: I needed to reduce the “Guide distance” to 0m and raise the Frequency to 40 and reduce the radius to 0.001 m - then the hair actually becomes curly. But I wonder why: Why do I need to adjust the values of this modifier in this way for one mesh and for another the basic setttings of the modifier just work fine?

I checked the size of the models themselves but it doesn’t seem to be related to mesh size - and as the transforms are applied it shouldn’t I think?!

But… this should be different on an almost two 2m “human” or some 20 cm “puppet”… right ? Or… what do you mean by:

:+1: for

 …

yes, I meant that independently on the size of the mesh, 2m or 20cm, this weird behavior sometimes shows up and sometimes not. It’s not the size of the mesh which influences the different outcome of the same settings in the modifier - so I wonder what it does. And as described: I checked on small and big meshes in terms of “meters” - all transitions applied. I wonder if the size is it as many of the configuration is in meters.

Well… to be honest i’m a bit in a fight with hair… and then “they made another hairsystem” and then “they changed it again” to use geometry nodes…

alright… I feel the same way
