trouble with updating is it no longer has the same menus etc as that in the btutes and books!

PS and other problems like i created a steam engine complete with the wheels and levers on the sides. worked in 2.49 - not later ones.
New tutorials are being written all the time. You just need to keep up. It’s hard to support people’s work when they are using old software, and even harder to justify the trouble of doing so when that software is free. All I know is that the file works fine in the most recent version of blender. It doesn’t work for you and you have an old version. Ergo, you need to upgrade.

I think you won’t be using proper hair brush, yeah and upgrading the version is the best option you can go for, or get brushes from Hair Brushes Suppliers.
