Hair with custom geometry (eg ropes)


I’m not sure how to do such thing (I’ve used in 3dsmax before) and couldn’t found any tutorial:
I want to make carpet with blender hair, but I want to use my own geometry for hair. In max I can use “replace geometry” and then that hair geometry is modified along hair curves. In blender I can use my own objects for hair but I don’t know how to do same thing as in max. Any help?
