Head Model WIP

Hi I decided to have a break from the brain melting rigging stuff and do some modeling practice, this is what i have so far, still roughing it out and need to sort out edge loops etc
so no doubt I will be ripping those verts apart with good old V key

It might be a good idea to have a look at it without subsurf on to make sure there are no out there deformations

there’s nothing wrong with a tri every now and then. For organic modeling you just have to be a bit (okay a lot) more cautious where to place them. Organic things aren’t completely smooth, they DO have a bit of chaos here and there. And tris subdivide the same as a “3pole” anyway.

EDIT:
Don’t model with subsurf on… Your model should look good without it first and foremost.

that’s a good point, and certain situations simply call for tris. (try making a tetrahedron with quads lol) That being said, I’m Extremely glad blender has quads. Look how nice the edgeloops are. Kudos sudai. (Imagine modeling a face with all tris?.. yuck)

not to mention tris end edgeloops. simply no way of continuing them
as for the model: good work sofar on the topology. looks like you have a weird bulge tho, behind the eye where those three quads come together in a ‘3pole’
could be just the angle tho.

Hi redone loops round the mouth and a bit of shaping on the lower section,Dropping into non subsurf mode more often now , Is there a short cut key for enable subsurf modifier during interactive display? Will more than likley redo the eye area to try and improve on the loops.

Hi heres another little update ,Cleaned up the vertex flow and started on the new nose shape, I will mirror over the over side and start sorting it out into a whole face.

heres a wire frame of the loops so far, going to be an interesting challenge joining the nose I might delete some loops and see if it still looks ok.

Re: the comment on not modelIng wIth subsurf on… I couldn’t dIsagree more. I always model wIth meshres/subsurf on If I Intend to use It for the end model. OtherwIse how do you know how your work wIll look when you do apply the modIfIer??

Slowly starting to look like head model worth keeping, would love a $1.00 for every click drag, click drag etc etc :eyebrowlift:

Cheers Frank, looking forward to seeing what you do with your project head, you don’t want to know how many redo’s I’ve done to try and get the edge flow ok :spin: should have it second nature after about 50 heads lol

Haha, I’ve only modeled one head and then tweaked the shape to create different characters but still not changing it to be extremely different because there’s got to be a certain style anyway…Keep it up I’d say and refer back to old renders to see you progress.
