Hello
I have been working on this horse for a while and decided to give rigging a go.
I have set up an armature and weight painted it, still a work in progress but have tried to put something basic together and will be adding more rigging to it as I go, although my understanding is limited at best. But that’s why I’m asking for help - to learn.
my question is, when i lift the back leg in a position near the body the thigh part of the mesh goes into the body mesh which looks horrible. i have tried positioning the leg along the X axis as well as Y but then it just looks funky.
I have tried looking for horse skeletons in top view to see how the legs are set from above. I have exhausted my google search techniques and looked in just about every 3d forum I could get into, but still no real improvement. Sigh.
So what can/should I do?
Do I need to rotate the back leg bones out slightly in edit mode?
Or do I need to rotate the mesh leg and bone out in edit mode?
Bad weight painting and bone placement?
Do I need to fix the topology of the mesh?
Am I using the wrong type of rig for the back leg?
none of the above.
Please help. I want to make a horse that can walk, run, trot, jump and all those other horsie things they do.
Basically the rig is made up of a mish mash of rigs and tutorials.
The back leg is a reverse leg rig from Robert Christian (wavez) Introduction to Rigging from the Blender of Summer Documentation Series.
The front leg is from Yogyog’s Rather Good Leg Tutorial.
The neck and spine are FK at the moment but I also have Yagapayanata’s 4 leg rig which I am looking into and also the zebra model downloaded from Blender 3D Club which has a very simple set up but they have used the limit axis alot in the armature bones panel and thought that was interesting. I also have Calvins Stretchy Bones tutorial which I might use for the spine?
I really admire Catboy85’s horse and rig, I think it is absolutly beautiful. I am not looking for that kind of sophistication, but hell it is an awsome thing!
I am teaching myself like so many on the forums, but without experience I’m afraid I won’t grow into even a moderate blender user and always be a noob. I can read the Blender Wiki to get infomation but i can’t see how I can translate it into my own works…yet.
Sorry for the rant and hopefully all the above makes sense. I have included some pics of mesh and armature from top and side views and a couple of crappy renders so maybe you can help me?
Thanks for stopping by
