Help with mirroring in Blender

I am trying to do a Grant Abbitt Blender tutorial on making a well, but I’m stuck trying to mirror something. I am trying to mirror that post so that it appears on the other side of the axis it is on and merges with it, but I don’t know what to do. I want them to connect at the open part that’s circled, but I don’t know what I should do. Any help?

What is your mirror object?

The orange dot is your origin, that needs to be at the center of your mirror. So shift c to center the 3d cursor and (with the object selected) right click > origin to 3d cursor.
