Jump on the bandwagon on weapon design, a samurai sword going high tech!
The basic design of the blade is from MGR
Looks good…and sharp:) The scratches and wear you added to it, finishes it off nicely. Just for those of us who don’t know… what is MGR stand for?
Nice texture work. I feel compelled to tell you that you have Chinese writing on your Japanese blade.
The character 灭 [extinguish] is not used in Japanese. Chinese hanzi only.
Although you did say it was the future… and we’ll all probably be speaking Pǔtōnghuà… so um… nevermind.
Originally I was going to put in “cut” instead but I thought “destory” seem like a better word for the purpose of this blade…

Amazing texturing work you have here.
The design and modeling are also fantastic but the texturing and shading really stands out.
It would be very interesting to see a node tree or image texture or something…
I’m ratting this thread 5 stars.
^Thanks! I will post the node tree later, but it was not all that complex at all.
It was basically diffuse node (with metal texture) and glossy shader mixed in some rust texture in the fac. input
the blade part is mix of two color metal texture( is the same texture but I color it red/orange in gimp)…
Sometimes when you increase the distance on the camera you can get the object in view of it.
You probably wouldn’t have a phillips (cross) slot cut into a hex head bolt. That stick out to me. reallu, you probably wouldn’t have bolts at all, more likely it would be riveted onto the handle.
if you do want to go with the bolted look, make sure there is a nut threaded on the other side. also, you would probably have some circular scratches around where the bolts go.
More grime in the crevices certainly wouldn’t hurt either.
just my 2 cents
oops, I didn’t even realize that the cross on hex had bolt is out of place…lol
The bolts are there to hold the blade in place, the blade is one long piece of metal that go all the way from the tip to the handle
Excellent work.
Sharp corners on the handle might be very uncomfortable for the hand though…especially during a long fight. Unless warrior is wearing a glove, of course - a thick one.
You have to organize your nodes better… ehehe…
Thank you for showing them.
Just one repair: you don’t have any image connected to the bump nodes. That means they are not doing anything. And you don’t need the RGB to BW node. When you connect a image to a value socket the color information is translated to value (grayscale).
You’ve got some artifacts around 音 [sound] .
I can plainly see the bounding rectangle of the kanji.
As a matter of fact, if I scrutinize 灭, I can see the faintest of blocks as well.
How do you have these plugged in ? [I don’t feel like analyzing your node setup]
You may wish to check your source image and check that the background is completely white [or black]
You should adjust the levels in your image editor to get #000 or #FFF depending on how you’ve got this plugged in.
Or is this a normal map? At any rate… I can see the boxes.
Fine work on the scratchy-scratchys though.
