High polygon count, better way to handle it?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to be posting in, I’m new to the site.

I’m trying to paint a high poly model with the texture paint tool but blender is slowing down significantly while I try to paint the model, or sometimes it will just close blender for no reason. (Crashed?) I’m wondering if its caused by blender’s default settings not grabbing enough ram or CPU usage it needs to render updates done to the mesh, and if that’s the problem, then what can I do to increase the maximum Ram/CPU usage?

If that’s not the problem then please tell me, I’m only guessing what could be the problem.
