This started happening since 4.0. Trying to launch it, it just closes down immediately.

I can’t find a crash.txt file, but in Linux Mint’s logs app it says this:

Have you checked your open GL version?
In terminal type:

glxinfo | grep “OpenGL version”

You should get something like:

OpenGL version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 545.29.02

Blender 4.0> needs OpenGL version 4.3 up

If your version is older that 4.3 update your graphic drivers.

Is this something that can updated via the Update Manager or do I have to wait for the next Linux Mint version? Or is it so deeply tied into the hardware that my only hope is to use a different machine completely?

I think updating your graphics drivers should fix it (it did for me).
What graphics card do you have?

It’s pretty old. It says this:

Ok I am not sure as I have an nvidia card, you can try with the update manager to see if there are updates for your card or Open GL updates.

I’ll stay hopeful, as sometimes I do get updates for Mesa related stuff in the Update Manager. Hopefully one of those updates help.
