Hinge control custom property

Hello,

My practice file is attached.

I’ve been following along from CGCookie’s rigging course, and I ran into a little issue.

It’s hard for me to articulate what exactly is happening, as I’m still learning the fundamentals. All I can tell you is that the custom property that was created isn’t working as intended.

At a value of 1.000, the hinge mechanism does indeed work. But this custom property was created to give the animator the flexibility of muting the copied rotation property of the root bone. For example, a person tilting their head from left to right. However, when set to ‘0’, the rotation of the Head bone is not in line with the neck (which is how it was demonstrated in the course).

Now obviously, I could just use a middle value (around .6), which will position the head bone where it needs to be. But I would really like a deeper understanding of what’s going on.

(In the file, you will see that the ‘Copy Rotation’ constraint’s Influence field is the color purple, which was pasted as a Driver - copied from the custom property of the Head bone)
