How can i fake metaballs sprites?

im trying to create fake meta balls does anyone know a blender node that will blur the normal map at the edges of these sprites i made? where they are visibly behind each other etc?
also can i have some script that will give me a blur node? its super useful

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do without any pictures and a .blend file. Here is a paper by Pixar that describes how they softened the features of the volumetric characters in their movie “Souls” by blending the character’s normal with the camera projected normal. See figure 3.
