how can i get the best out of my not so new pc?

hi anyone, this is my very first post :-)…

i tried to look around for tips these past days, i’m trying to get the best cycles performance out of my desktop pc, it’s not completely outdated but it’s not new either… i have a phenom 955 with a gtx260 - cuda 1.3 so not supported since 2.67… i know the gpu is not a beast but in 2.66 it’s still way faster than my cpu… is there any way to enable it in 2.71?

i read somewhere that some features aren’t working with cuda below 2.0 so i thought i’d try opencl, it sure is slower than cuda but still may be faster than my phenom… do yu think it’s worth it?
i tried opencl-test but had no luck (quite common it seems), memory usage kept manageable, about 3gb, but after a long time compiling, more than half an hour i think, it hanged my whole system so i had to reset… i’m using ubuntu 14.04 but if needed i can go back to windows…

all suggestions are very welcome, thank you all very much!!!
