How can you create a Scale armor in Blender?

Something like this: https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/054/869/839/large/adrian-hoff-tbrender-068.jpg?1665567244

The only way I know of doing this is by simple manually texturing every single individual scale. Is there a better way?

geometry nodes- @higgsas has a tool for this

I would prefer not to use geometry nodes since Iā€™m not a programmer and those things are NOT artist friendly.

Well you could use a base geometry and use the odl instacning methodā€¦

ā€¦ but itā€™s very hard to contol the direction of the instancesā€¦ simple adding a quad can break itā€™s orientationā€¦ and if the underlaying geometry has to be alterantively setā€¦

So essentially you want some tedious repeating process doneā€¦ so that what are computers good forā€¦repeating defined proceduresā€¦ so a procedural approuch like Geometry nodes is the best you can getā€¦ (and have used several artistsā€¦ ).

Nah. You got Zbrush IMM brushes and nanomesh. I was just looking to see if there were some artist friendly alternatives in Blender.

But Blender still has a looong way to go it seems.

Ohhā€¦ so you want to paint them with a strokeā€¦ iā€™m not so much into the us e of alphas and sculptingā€¦ hmmā€¦ but maybe this:

But yesā€¦ itā€™s a long way to get rid of some prejudice when someone doesnā€™t know betterā€¦

Typical Blender Cultist behaviour.

You askedā€¦ so it seems you donā€™t know blenderā€¦ and now you telling us that something else is betterā€¦
ā€¦so just use your stuffā€¦

Good luck.

Sounds like zBrush has a long way to go, if you were looking for alternative software.

Dude, youā€™re on a Blender forum. If weā€™re not surrounding you in a circle chanting ā€˜One of us! One of us!ā€™ then weā€™re not doing our jobs!

That said, if you knew what specifically you were after, then why not ask that in the first place?

ā€œHow can I emulate Zbrushā€™s blah blah blah in Blenderā€

Much easier than getting pissy.

Have you seen this? Note: it has the same limitations as Nanomesh regarding the quad size discrepancy.

Iā€™ve seen that sort of user before. They come to a place seemingly asking for help/advice, but they turn down every offer without even trying. It seems their idea all along is to call people names, ā€œcultistsā€ and whatnot, and bitch about. Just donā€™t feed these trolls, theyā€™re not worth anyoneā€™s time.

@Filnisius on the off-chance youā€™re here in good faith, try geometry nodes. Let go of your preconceptions. Youā€™re wrong. Youā€™re going to be wrong a lot. Take it in and good luck. Donā€™t bother answering

geometry nodes is the only advanced tool we have currently for this purposes and way more better than zbrush where in its current capabilities cannot imitate such workflow, and yes is low level nodes system not meant for every artist but only those how can understand it and embrace it into their artworks, did you know that people that does this are also artists, not only blender, also houdini and even cinema4d is not really that hard to learn, is just complex to build in most cases and requires a lot of math knowledge and etc, and dont be like a bitch here calling everyone tards and blender cultistsā€¦

@Filnisius youā€™re on very thin ice here, Iā€™d recommend you change your attitude promptly if you want to continue using this forum. Insults are not allowed, and your usage of slurs in your insults is not leaving me much wiggle room. Youā€™ll need to acknowledge this warning, and make a public commitment to avoid derogatory language and slurs, within 48 hours, or youā€™ll receive a supension. Should that occur, you can message the @moderators with a commitment to not use slurs again, and your suspension will be lifted.

So you donā€™t actually want to model scale armour which would move realistically? Like actual scale armour made of overlapping, flat plates of metal. You want snake skin. OK. Continue with ZBrush.

Haha!!! Brilliant.
