I don’t want the second material, or I suppose it does not matter. tried deleting it and then hitting the ‘x’ but it removes the link from the object to the datablock. Doesn’t delete. Its screwing up my export…I tried hitting x key to delete that does nothing, not does hitting the delete key with it selected.

If I remember right, if the datablock is not attached to anything, saving the .blend file and re-opening it removes the unattached materials. It’s one of the oddities I puzzled over a lot, too.
You can also delete this second material index from your object. Unused materials (with an o in front of their name) will be removed when your file is re-opend
