How do I loft/sweep/extrude a plane along a curve (nurb or bezier)?

I’m using 2.75 and want to create a curved, rectangular cross sectioned beam.


I’ve created and sized a plane, and a bezier curve as the path.

I’m obviously missing something very basic, but can only find reference to using another curve as the shape - not a plane or polygon.

Option 1, convert the plane to a curve object and use that as the Bevel Object for the curve


Option 2, add thickness to the plane and use an array and curve modifier on it


or you could add a bezier curve, change it’s resolution and thickness, and then convert it to a mesh.
