How do I place reference images (Top, Side, and Front) in Blender 2.8?

I am not getting this new process to work well. I do not understand the terms in Depth and Side where it gives you the option of Front and Back for the images.

Should I have an image brought in as Reference of Background?

I am going to model a ship’s hull.

Just doesn’t seem like the Back and Front options apply the same to each image. Wierd. I guess I will have to play around with this some more.

If anyone knows of a good little tutorial for an idiot like myself I would be grateful for a link.
