How many texture layers can you put onto an object?

How many?

I’m thinking in cycles and half a dozen maps.

AO
Base metal
Paint layer (with chips showing underbase)
bump
rust layer
grease layer

Is that even possible to do? I know MARI is awesome and when I tried the demo it was like working in photoshop, but I never figured out how to bring all the layers back into blender before the demo ran out.
Technically I could still paint in blender but the node setup for multi textures on one object is confusing me.

Anyone have an idea?

How many? As many as your hardware is able to handle, as far as I know.
There is a limitation on how many different UV maps you can use (8 per object), but those you listed only need one, two at the most.

If you have a confusion about how to set Cycles materials with textures, show what part confuses you and ask how to do it.
If you plan to paint in Blender, you should do it in Blender render mode to have better preview and then use the painted texture in Cycles.

Hi ja12,

Yes I plan to texture paint. Hard metal surface. Painting the layers is ok I can do that in blender or Photoshop, it’s just how to set up nodes that confuses me. I take it a node set honing blender int will be completely different than cycles?

If you are using blender 2.69 or earlier then the answer is 18 per material.

For 2.70 this has been increased

You don’t have to use nodes in Blender internal for painting. It can preview face assigned textures (images assigned to UV faces in the UV/Image editor). You need to set up a simple material and the texture for Blender render if it requires GLSL shading, such as painting and previewing bump map http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIMJxX9i490

Setting those in Cycles is different. Also if you use an addon for painting those textures, it might have some limitations I’m not aware of.

Ok, but these can be layered on top of each other?I will need this in cycles too
