How to create a decent car paint material?

Hey,

I’ve been trying to find out how to create a two-tone car paint material, like this one by Daniel8488: Image

I’ve done a decent search of the net and can’t find what I’m looking for. I found one tutorial for 3D Studio but it wasn’t overly helpful… too software specific. What I’m asking for are recommended material settings, lighting rigs, and links to existing tutorials. I’d prefer not to use pre-made materials from a repository, as I prefer my finished projects to be entirely my own work.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Although it’s a bit hard maybe to wrap your brain around it at first, the “node based materials” scheme is probably the ticket.

Automobile paint is effectively “multi- layered,” with the light penetrating a slight distance into the paint. You can model that sort of thing only with nodes.

Thanks for the replies. I’ve never used material nodes before but I’ve done a bit of work now with rendering nodes, so I should be able to figure it out from waylow’s link.
