How to Create Cool sci-fi backgrounds

Hi !
I have a question about modeling or texturing in blender.
I would like to create a background CG like the space debris at 0:13 of the following URL using blender.

Is it possible to make it look as precise as in this video?
When I asked the question on another site, I received the answer of using “volume scatter”. But I could not handle it well.

Hello !

Indeed using volume is an option. But I’m not sure it’s what’s used here.
You can look at displace modifier, and also using displacement map in the shader.
Something like this :

But obviously using different textures than bricks.

That way you’ll have simple 3D shapes and the details will be added using textures. That at least could give you a good basis.

What I find very cool in the reference is that it relies a lot on the overall impression. It’s hard to tell what we are really looking at, but there is a great sense of depth, scale, and complexity.
Having detailed models and interesting patterns is one thing but on top of that there are a lot of little tricks that emphasis the overall impression.

So once you have that good basis using displacement, obviously you’ll be only half way through…

Thank you for your kind reply.
I am going to do a study on Displacement.
I understand that I can use Displacement to change the look of the object, but is there any good way to randomly scatter the objects as in the reference?

Geometry Nodes is your best bet for this:

Yes ! as @joseph pointed out geometry nodes is worth looking into !
It should also be possible to use very simple modeled geometry and let the displacement do the heavy work, that way you have some easy control over the overall shape .

You can of course use all methods together once you’ve learned them separately !

Ohh! The Geometry Node was a blind spot.
Thanks for the great advice.
In summary, am I correct that I should just scatter the debris created using Displacement with GeometryNode?

It’s hard to tell what is even going on in that shot quite honestly. It’s so processed and goes by so quick that it could just be a bunch of gibberish geo scattered about with some volume fog and high key lighting.

Your best bet is to just experiment, you’ll get there eventually. Not sure Geo Nodes is necessarily the answer for something like this.

I understand!
Thank you all for the great advice.
