I would like to make the strands grow out of the sphere, anyone know of a tutorial or can pass along a detailed explanation of how to do this?
Are you using paths as the particles?
Correct, using paths as particles.
In the curve settings > Geometry there are sliders for start and end. You can keyframe these to make curves grow.
